Discover The Wild Animal Sanctuary

African Lion

Are you located near the Keenesburg, CO, area, and looking for a family-friendly adventure? If so, there’s no better place than The Wild Animal Sanctuary. During your visit, you will discover over 10,500 acres of natural habitats and roaming wild animals.

The mission of the Sanctuary is to rescue and care for animals who have been held captive. The Wild Animal Sanctuary doesn’t lock animals in cages, but instead lets them roam around their large, open acreage.

History of The Sanctuary

The Wild Animal Sanctuary was established in 1980 in Boulder, Colorado. Since then, the Sanctuary has moved to a much larger location where there is even more room for animals.

Originally, the Wild Animal Sanctuary was not open to the public—it was simply a place for rescued wildlife to live. Since opening their doors to the public in 2001, however, the Sanctuary encourages supporters and guests interested in learning about the Captive Wildlife Crisis to visit the park.

Things to Know Before Visiting

Bear at Wild Animal SanctuaryThe Wild Animal Sanctuary is designed differently than an average zoo. The experience is less for entertainment purposes and more for helping educate guests on how important it is to rescue captive wild animals.

When you visit, you won’t be walking by exhibits and viewing animals on display, as all the animals roam freely and live as if they were in their natural habitat. Guests are able to get a closer view by walking down the 1.5-mile elevated walkway.

Some of the animals you can expect to see during your visit include:

  • African Lions
  • Tigers
  • Bears
  • Ostriches
  • Jaguars

How You Can Help The Wild Animal Sanctuary

Since The Wild Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit organization, they rely on the support they receive from the community—and there are a variety of ways you can help, including making a donation, “adopting” an animal, volunteering, pledging your support, and more.

You can also show your support by buying a ticket to their Summer Safari Dinner. These annual fundraisers include good food, friends, and entertainment, and all proceeds from the event go toward helping the Sanctuary animals.
