St. Patrick’s Day is a time to celebrate the wonder and beauty of the Irish culture. It’s a time to share in music and dance with friends and family.
This St. Patrick’s Day weekend, why not enjoy the holiday with your local Colorado community at the Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade? To learn all about this fun-filled event, continue reading the following local spotlight.
History of the Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Denver held its very first St. Patrick’s Day Parade back in 1889. At that time, the festivities kicked off with a Grand Ball at the Denver Chamber of Commerce, an event that local news deemed as “the most prominent and pleasing social event in the city.”
The first parade as we know it today took place in 1963 with around 5,000 people in attendance. Now, over 57 years later, Denver couldn’t be more proud to continue this wonderful tradition of music, dance, and merriment.
Festivities & Events
Looking to join in the fun? Here’s all you need to know about this year’s parade.
The parade will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020, stepping off at 9:30 a.m. Starting at Wynkoop at 19th, the parade will continue down 17th Street in front of Union Station, turning down Blake Street and proceeding up to 27th Street. The parade will consist of floats, music, and dancing.
In order to make the most of the event, it’s recommended that guests arrive early to secure a good view of the parade. For the best chance at catching a full view of the performances, the ideal location is south of 20th Avenue on Blake Street. Keep in mind, however, due to the popularity of this section, it is limited to standing room only.
Honorees & Speakers
This year, the Grand Marshal will be none other than Fox 31 News Anchor Aristea Brady. The 2020 Queen Colleen award will be presented to Madison Dorenkamp, Miss Colorado USA 2019.
Furthermore, the 2020 Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be honoring police, firefighters, and other first responders. In correlation with this, donations and support can be made to the chosen charity for the event, Shield616.
If you’d like to get involved in helping the event run smoothly, consider signing up as a volunteer! The Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee is made up of over 300 volunteers. They could not pull it off successfully without the support of the community and truly appreciate everyone’s dedication to the success of this annual event.
