Athletics are about so much more than competition. They’re about feeling like a part of something bigger than yourself—a team of individuals working together to better their bodies and minds. Through sports, you can achieve fitness, fun, and even a sense of community.
Special Olympics is the world’s largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It gives them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy.

Year-Round Athletics Fun
Sports can benefit all who play them. Through sports, people with intellectual disabilities discover new strengths and abilities, skills, and success.
For 50 years, Special Olympics Colorado provides year-round training and competition for over 25,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities living in Colorado. With proper instruction and encouragement, athletes can learn, enjoy, and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Coaches and volunteers share the spirit of inclusion, acceptance, fun, and determination.
Special Olympics Colorado hosts over 100 different competitions every year with 22 sports to choose from.
The organization’s athletics offerings are broken up by season, with several sports offered in each. For example, during the winter season (January–March), participants can enjoy:
- Speed Skating
- Figure Skating
- Cross Country Skiing
- Alpine Skiing
Everyone Can Partake in the Thrill of Competition
By working with teammates and coaches during their 6–8-week regular season, athletes have the opportunity to compete in a 1-day area championship. If they take home the gold, they can advance to a statewide championship.
These competitions aren’t just fun—they’re thrilling, too. Special Olympics Colorado athletes find joy, confidence, and fulfillment both on and off the playing field.
