Many Colorado runners find that their state’s frigid winter temps make sticking to a running regiment extra challenging. Luckily, avid runners have each other. And each year Colorado runners muster up the motivation (and then some!) to avoid losing pace during these chilly months.

About the Winter Distance Series
With one race in December, one in January, and a final one held in February, the Winter Distance Series is Littleton’s annual chain of races that helps participants stay fit throughout the cold weather months. Each event is held at the Hudson Gardens in Littleton and offers short and long distance race options.
Race 1: Santa Stampede
The first race is the Santa Stampede 5K/10K on Saturday, December 12. This flat, fast course is a jolly jaunt along the banks of the beautiful South Platte River. All registrants get a Santa hat, race shirt, and admittance to an epic post-race party with over 20 local food and merchandise vendors in attendance.
Race 2: Frosty’s Frozen
The middle Winter Distance Series run is the Frosty’s Frozen Five & Ten mile race to be held on the morning of Saturday, January 16. This course starts and ends at Hudson Gardens following the paved Platte River Trail. Warm up your frolicking muscles before the race at The Inn at the Hudson Gardens and stick around post-run to refuel with baked goodies as you marvel at you finisher’s medal.
Registration for Frosty’s Frozen 5M costs $40 to enter ahead of time. The 10-miler is $50 in advance to participate. Go the distance and run a total of 15 miles (a great push run for half marathon training!) for $60 before race day. (All day-of registrations are an additional $5.)
Race 3: Snowman Stampede
The final winter race is the Snowman Stampede 5 mile/10 mile on Saturday, February 20. The high energy at this winter-themed race will keep your body moving and forgetting about the low temps. This race that travels another stretch of the extensive Platte River Trail is a speedy, PR-worthy track and a rewarding end to a great series.
Signing up for the Snowman Stampede 5M is $40 pre-race and $50 for 10 mile runners who sign up in advance. Double up on your distance for $60. (All race day registration is an additional $5.)
Winter Distance Series Race Day Schedule
Each Winter Distance Series race follows the same timeline on race day, as follows:
• 7:30 am: Race day registration and packet pickup begins
• 8:45 am: Free quarter-mile kids’ run
• 9 am: 5K (or 5 miler) start
• 10 am: 5K (or 5 mile) awards
• 10:15 am: 10K (or 10 mile) start
• 11:30 am: 10K (or 10 mile) awards
