Most folks would agree that pumpkins dropping from the sky sounds like a rainy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs-type of legend. But the people of Aurora, CO, have gotten used to seeing autumn’s orange icon hurtling through the air each October during a special two-day event.
This year at the 2015 Punkin Chunkin held on October 10 and 11, residents from around Denver and beyond will flock to Aurora to watch in awe as more than 15 teams compete to see who can fling their pack of pumpkins the farthest.

We’re Not Punkin’ You
This year marks the 18th that this unique Aurora celebration has been smashing pumpkins and spurring on family fun at the Arapahoe Park racetrack. Event hours for this year’s Punkin Chunkin run from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, October 10 and 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday, October 11. Admission to this awesome fall event is only $5 for adults, while children 12 and under are free.
More than anything, this event gives pumpkins everywhere a pat on the back with a variety of free fall activities and tributes in addition to the main event. Get your face painted with a jack-o-lantern grin, weave your way through a festive corn maze, and make your own scarecrow to take home and put on display.
Attendees can also pick out their own pumpkins from the Chunkin patch and bring out their gourd-geous personalities by participating in creative carving demos and fun fall crafts. In the midst of all the pumpkin throwing, see if you have what it takes to ride the mechanical pumpkin—or if it’ll throw you!
The Art of the Chunk
Over the course of this two-day chunkin, 15 teams are signed up to make pumpkins soar and hearts race. Who will launch their pumpkins and themselves into Punkin Chunkin fame? You can head to the pumpkin pit to watch competition rounds held throughout both festival days. Make sure you don’t miss seeing the final chunkers go head to head to decide a winner at the final fling at 1:45 pm on Sunday.
Savor and Spectate
Festival attendees can also look forward to nibbling and noshing on eats from local food vendors while watching the pumpkin acrobats in play. Taste autumn inspirations from a number of Aurora’s best concessions, including tasty tacos from La Hacienda, twisted takes on funnel cake from Funnellicious, and delectable sweets from Grammys Goodies. Punkin Chunkin goers who are over 21 can head over to the beer patch to grab a golden-hued fall beverage or two courtesy of Coors and Dry Dock Brewing.
Aurora’s 2015 Punkin Chunkin is projected to be the biggest and best fall festival yet! Get ready for Halloween with family and friends and celebrate the many talents of the humble pumpkin at this unique, exciting, and creative event.
